Google confirmed today they're killing Chrome (the OS) in favor of Android, combining the two, supposed to happen in 2017.

It finally happened. The writing has been on the wall forever.

I was kinda hoping Android would be ditched for Chrome OS though seeing how Chrome OS doesn't let you skin it. Stock updates from all OEMs would rock.

Sounds like a good move.

Alphabet Inc.’s Google plans to fold its Chrome operating system for personal computers into its Android mobile-operating system, according to people familiar with the matter, a sign of the growing dominance of mobile computing.

Google engineers have been working for roughly two years to combine the operating systems and have made progress recently, two of the people said. The company plans to unveil its new, single operating system in 2017, but expects to show off an early version next year, one of the people said.

Oh and link as the OP was too lazy. :p

Not a fan of this. It's seems to be an attempt to undermine AOSP in favor of greater control they have in Chrome, and it's why I thought they would combine the two eventually back when they first announced Chrome OS.

That already happened when Google moved a lot of the ASOP apps into the Play Store.

I am just hoping for a real desktop mode. I am sick of Windows and I would love to make Android my primary OS on the desktop.

Makes you wonder who's in charge @ Alphabet or whatever the heck they are.

How's that? As far as I am aware there were rumors they would be merged - though you did say confirmed in your OP (link?) - and the only official word from Google was that both were sticking around.

Yeah, the only confirmation was that they aren't doing this.

I don't doubt that this will actually happen but I think that it'll be a gradual, organic merging.
