I have to admit the first time I came across a case with no speaker I went nuts for a few minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't get a clean POST beep from my new board. Duh... 🙂 I laughed it off but it was embarrassing for a while.

While we're all venting I will say that I also loathe the idiots who rag on and post meaningless reviews because a product does not have a feature or did not do something it was never designed to do. Those reviews are a 1.5 second waste of my time. Complaining that a mATX case doesn't have much room or the board has an "old chipset" are common complaints among idiots. Did they not RTFM or even look at the images?

I know this would go against every known marketing strategy, but I wish just for one day all e-tailers like NE and ZZF would require the successful completion of an aptitude test before an order could be placed - then post the scores!! Maybe I'm just in a bad mood tonight but I like it.

I like the posts about cases when they complain it shows fingerprints on it. That always cracks me up. They even remove a star for it. lol

I was looking at user reviews on Newegg and found another idiot:
Pros: fast, lots of space.

Cons: 70 gb short of advertised space for me. i know that hard drives usualy have less then advertised but 70 gb is still too much. Its about the size of the hard drive that was replaced.

Other Thoughts: some people say its kinda loud but my computer has a large fan on the top that covers everything else so i cant comment.

Yeah, I don't like the fact that HDD manufacturer's think it's "OK" to represent storage with one definition for "MB", while using the widely-accepted definition to represent cache memory and such. Still, anyone who claims to know about the discrepancy should also know that the difference is cumulatively bigger as capacity increases.

HDD manufacturers define storage as:
KB = 1,000 B
MB = 1,000,000 B
GB = 1,000,000,000 B
TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B

Everyone else defines storage as:
KB = 1,024 B
MB = 1,048,576 B (1,024 KB)
GB = 1,073,741,824 B (1,024 MB)
TB = 1,099,511,627,776 B (1,024 GB)

It's pretty basic to understand that, if an HDD manufacturer's idea of "1 GB" is somewhat less than what everyone else calls 1 GB, then the difference is greater and greater as the storage capacity increases.

Difference @ 1 TB:
99,511,627,776 B = ~92.7 GB

Difference @ 2 TB:
199,023,255,552 B = ~185.4 GB

Difference @ 3 TB:
298,534,883,328 B = ~278 GB

I was looking at this hard drive:

Another one from the same product:
Pros: Fast, large capacity

Cons: Not reliable for data storage. (And what's with every hard drive nowadays measuing data increments in intervals of 1000 and not 1024?? I know it's always like this with hard drive capacity measurements, but I only got about 930GB of the 1000[?!] I'm supposed to have.)

Other Thoughts: I am ITadmin with 6 years ed./7 years pro. experience. Asked for 2 of these hard drives for Xmas, making sure to tell the purchaser to handle them carefully. Received an unopened NewEgg box on Xmas. Have over 600GB of data I was looking to store (some of this data dates back to high school) so I decided to set these two drives up in a hardware-RAID1 mirrored config. Plugged in the drives, set up the RAID1 array, gave them a low-level format, and then moved and organized my data on the new 1000GB drive. (Keep in mind that two 1000GB drives in a RAID1 array means you will only have 1000GB[?!] available for use.) I'm glad I used a RAID1 config, because 6 days later one of the hard drives failed. Although it still runs after a reboot, it keeps failing at random times and also during RAID1 rebuilds. I am worried I may lose the working drive and the data on it in the near future. Do not get this drive unless you are using a rebuildable RAID config and you don't mind rebuilding alot.
Double fail.

First, he lists something as a "con" when he supposedly already knew it applies to ALL HDDs.

Second, he does the same thing that he's criticizing by saying that he expected "1,000 GB!" 🙂

I read the reveiws on every "new" item I purchase particularly on NE. While many are hilarious I would say 50% have some worthwile info.
Last night I made a mobo / CPU purchase decision based on a NE reveiw. A zotac combo offered might not be compatible, the possibility was mentioned to me here at anand, I studied the online documentation, googled and read forums with no definitive answer. Flipping through reveiws someone had posted their specs, his writing wasn't to far off the wall, so I'll risk it...
Mind you, that chip will swap into my current rig and my quad is listed in zotacs' testing,,,,😉

This was great...

Pros: WOW! takes about 10 seconds from POST to my desktop. No lag time EVER when doing everything except gaming. no noise!

Cons: my girlfriend doesn't understand why this is so awesome =(

i read them, sorted by worst reviews first. i read the one eggs, and look for people that have legitimate complaints.

I do the same thing. I look at the 1 and 2 star reviews first, and also try to pay attention to the dates on the reviews. If the product has dozens/hundreds of 4&5 stars, and a couple of dozen recent 1&2 stars, then I tend to shy away. If it has like 4% 1 star though, I usually don't care.

People still need the speaker? I thought motherboards took on the speaker role. Even if it doesn't, i've never needed to POST my system for an error because everything is setup correctly the first time :]

Haha, no doubt..

I'm almost positive my Silverstone does not have a speaker.
Come to think of it, when I setup my new build a couple months ago, I don't know if the MB does either. Normally they are either hard-wired, or they give you a mini speaker in the mainboard or case hardware (cant remember which I've seen it in)

I don't believe I have a MB speaker at all! 😛

my motherboard since its watercooled, has sonar speaker instead of a normal speaker. :hmm:
