The MATV is a MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle, 1 class about the HMMWV in armor, 1 level lower in mobility. The true replacement for the HMMWV will be the JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle).

It' all about the right tool for the job. You don't send a tank to deliver supplie jut like you wouldn't send a HMMWV to take down an armored division.

Probably about 2 months after hell freezes over. These things cost about half a million each and are about as armored as you can get. I don't think you'll see them in anyone's driveway anytime soon.

That is a MRAP. That vehicle is not a Hummer replacement. Also at 14+ tons it is way heavier and uses a lot of diesel. Actually there has been some serious discussion about what do to with all the extra MRAP vehicles after Iraq winds down. The vehicles since they are so heavy have limited off road capability compared to other equipment. They are basically built for urban conflicts with IED's and now we have thousands of them. The vehicles have issues in Afghanistan because of the step grades and very rough road conditions.

Nice pics. Those things are monsters.

MATV Multipurpose All Terrain Vehicle weighing 25,000 lbs (vs 50,000 currently) and twice as fast - $500,000 each.

We need 10,000 of them according to Uncle Sam.

Back in the day I did an internship for that company and one of the perks for the interns was getting to go on the dry runs of the vehicles before they shipped...

I was fortunate enough to get to go on one of the HET's...the trucks that drive around the M1A1 tanks
