What is the world coming to? Sony is more expensive then Acer? 😛
That's like saying you're shocked to see that brands like Dell and HP are cheaper than Apple.

Then again, more shocking is that Dell's Adamo tiny laptop is more expensive than Apple's Macbook Air. I truly do not understand that one, at all. I don't care how much luxury Dell thinks the Adamo is, no way should Apple be cheaper. Especially considering Dell isn't even using the higher-speed C2D's that Apple and HP/Voodoo are using in their comparable laptops.

sony is a diluted pig bastard of a brand at this point.
to the lay person, it wasnt readily apparent why one was 899 and one was 299
it wasnt to me.
i saw built in gps on the sticker..it had vista other than that..
it was a real head scratcher.
i remember benQ very much
acer shit
i saw a benq cdrw fly open and a cd almost become airbornbe rotating so fast.
so acer/benq has provided some LOLs
its no sony, but niether is sony anymore

I bought a $400 laptop from Acer a few months ago, I'm very happy with it. Of course it could blow up in my face at any moment 😉.

This Vaio P?

Yes, the markup is extravagant, but hasn't Sony always been all about the "e-peen"

But surprisingly, it may be "justified" depending on how you look at it:

- The Aspire One (I had one!) is $299, and you get a ton of stuff for that $$$. Practically everyone should know the typical netbook specs...
---- 9"-10", 1024x600, 80gb-160gb HDD, 1gb DDR2, Win XP Home, 2.3lbs -> 2.8lbs (depending on 3-6cell battery)
- The Vaio P is its own little niche. Look how extremely low profile it is. Specs that are different?
---- 8", 1600x768, "full" compact keyboard. Why? They took out the trackpad!!! 2gb DDR2, 1.4lbs

Just sayin', that's all 😛

I love my 900. It replaced my Lenovo as my portable computer.

yeah that was it
it just seemed outrageous even for sony.
side by side screens open the vaio screen wasnt appreciably better, and it was smaller.
im not saying all things being equal i wouldnt choose it over the aspire(of course i would) but it more favored how nice the aspire seemed to be for 299 vs. the sony for 899

so at what price point does it go from netbook to ultraportable?
No price point. Its the features and power.

You can spend a lot of money on upgrades for your netbook and end up with something slightly more expensive than the cheapest ultra portable.

It all depends on what you need. BUT.......
I will say that if you decide to get a netbook you should keep it simple and cheap. There is absolutely no logical reason to make it expensive. If you want lots of features and are willing to spend the money, go ahead and get a small laptop.

it NEVER keeps its native resolution, i always have to change it on reboot.
bios utility doesnt work
its slower than some pentium 2 machines ive had.
i have used it maybe 4 hours in the last year, i just gave up on it

completely understandable. in this economy, the Asus 1000* series, the new Samsung NC10, Dell Mini 10-12, MSI Wind, etc... are all better alternatives considering the price points.

of course, if i was filthy rich and used $100 bills as firewood, i'd probably buy all these and stick em in industrial microwaves cuz i'd be bored (with the Vaio P in the oven)

isn't the distinction based on the specs rather than the price? Atom = netbook.

ultraportables have traditionally had slow processors. so that's nothing new. if someone were to stick an atom 330 with the nvidia platform in a 12" widescreen laptop, would it be a netbook or an ultraportable?

I do have that issue. I keep mine plugged in as much as possible though. It's kept on charge when not in use, and I use the cord whenever possible.

I put Ubuntu-eee on mine. Firefox can be laggy, but with some tweaks it can be smoothed out. Otherwise no issues :^)
