saw the 17" powerbook at work...

I'm looking at one right now (the customer's coming by to pick it up this afternoon) and it's simply beautiful. It has the most amazing features/LCD that I've ever seen. And DAMN is it fast... that said, it really is too big to carry around IMO. It would make a nice desktop replacement/puesdo portable (ie. "luggable"), it's just too unwieldy for my taste.

Now the new 15" Powerbooks coming out... :Q Those are just perfect. Almost as light as my PB 12 with all the fatures of the PB 17, very nice! Look for those in May/June.

New fifteeners are coming out? :Q

Dammit! I want a Powerbook noooooowwwwwww! Should I wait? 😱

The 17" is inconveniently large to carry around. It's a fine desktop replacement though...

Keep in mind that Apple doesn't make the sturdiest laptops, which certainly becomes a factor when carrying and handling such a large piece of equipment.

Oh yea, definitely wait to take a peek at the new 15" before buying. I definitely agree that 17" is far too large, and 12" is teeny weeny.

I've never known that to be the case with the Powerbooks, they're very sturdy and tough. The Nat'l Lab in Oak Ridge, a big customer of ours, only uses Powerbooks for just that reason. These guys have shattered Thinkpads, Latitudes, etc. and the only ones they've found to be tough enough are PBs. Now the iBook... that's different story entirely.

I would say the ibooks are much sturdier than the powerbooks. Ive got a powerbook, and even though i love it, i think they could have made it sturdier. For example, just like gold plating, the titanium scratches off really easily. A few other friends have had their moniters replaced because they set a book on the computer closed and it cracked the screen.

I have seen ibooks dropped kicked spilled on and still go, they take a beating like its nothing. There is a website where a guy has driven over one with a car, parked a car on it, dipped it in water and it still worked. It was a little messed up after being dipped in water, but it still booted into osx.

Anyways, they are great computers.

You've got to be kidding. As much of a fan as I am of the TiBooks, they are NOT that sturdy nor even very reliable. The titanium scratches easily, the keyboards are flimsy, on some, the keyboard leaves marks on the LCD, the batteries come loose, firstgens have problems with the LCD hinges breaking during normal use, and many other QC issues. I would never recommend a TiBook to a client looking for an everyday machine that he or she would even think about transporting to/from the office on any regular schedule unless they absolutely pushed the issue of having a top of the line, cool-looking machine.

I'd sacrifice some portability to whip out a 17" lcd 🙂

So would I man, so would I.

I'd think of it as a desktop computer that can be transported easily (not thrown in a backpack, granted, but no where near porting a desktop/monitor)

man u have to see it.........

it seems pretty freaking portable....

if minime can lug it around, so can i, goddamnit!

Ummm... Ithink you're referring to the TI PBs, the new PBs are in brushed aluminum cases. You can scratch em all you want, just take some steel wool and smooth it out. The first TIs did have those issues though, but it hardly affected their durability, just their cosmetics... and their hinges have changed fixing most of those other problems. These new generation PBs are really sweet though, I'm very much looking forward to the new 15"ers.

PB 17 weighs a bit under 7lbs w/ battery.
