Microsoft will push Windows 10 even harder in 2016

Windows 10 is a wonderful operating system -- the best operating system that Microsoft has ever created. With that said, there are still many bugs in it. Plus, the privacy concerns are legit, despite what some fan-sites may have you believe. My biggest annoyance? Advertisement prompts telling me to try Office 365, and regular survey prompts asking me to rate Windows -- I am on the retail build, not pre-release, and that is totally inappropriate.

With all of that said, it is totally understandable that some Windows 7 and 8 users want to hold off on installing version 10. Sadly, Microsoft seems intent on pushing the new operating system on the world. First, the company was caught intentionally downloading Windows 10 setup files onto unsuspecting PCs. Of course, let us not forget that "accident" where Microsoft forcibly upgraded some computers to Windows 10. Now, according to Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group, the company will start pushing Windows 10 even harder in 2016.

"Early next year, we expect to be re-categorizing Windows 10 as a 'Recommended Update'. Depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device. Before the upgrade changes the OS of your device, you will be clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue. And of course, if you choose to upgrade (our recommendation!), then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don't love it", says Terry Myerson,

Anyone with a Windows phone and a grandfathered unlimited plan is screwed since Windows 10 uses up so much of your bandwidth for data collection you end up getting banned by your phone provider lmao.

If that's the case carriers won't push the upgrade to its customers.

Dear M$,

Thank you for making Win7 good enough that I can skip the Win10 debacle entirely. See ya for Win 11 or Win 12.

Seeing the insane direction of MS, I'm so glad I run Linux now. When I saw 8 I knew they were headed in a bad direction. I did kinda have hopes for 9 errr 10 but the spy stuff and their desperation at trying to get everyone on it has turned me off of it.

Eh, I don't think there will be. Too many people embracing it like it's the 2nd coming. Hard to believe on a tech forum that people jump to it with no care in the world. I think people are trying to fool themselves into thinking they are getting something they aren't. Not saying that eventually we won't all be on it unless we jump ship, but then, as long as others want to be the testers, I have no problem with that.

However, if you think about what they wanted with Xbox One, and Office, ask yourself why they are giving it away for free and trying to push everyone to it. This company doesn't do things out of the kindness of its heart. They have a plan.

Oh come on, it's not that bad.

It's one thing to have google, facebook, NSA or other specific sites/services spying on you... which is still BAD, but when your actual computer is also spying on you, that's where I draw the line. Yeah you can probably disable it or find a work around, but if I have to hack an OS to claim my own PC as being my own, it's not an OS worth using.

Basically when you install Windows, MS owns your computer, it's their property. You are using it as a service. I'll stick with Linux TYVM.

My computer isn't spying on me any more than any other computer ever has.

And I don't know what his beef is with the Office prompts and stuff... I have not had a single instance of either of those happening on my computer since I got the upgrade.

And MS does not "own" my PC in any way, shape, or form.

I've seen "Try Office 365" notification banner multiple times on my fresh, clean Win10 install.

Sadly it has increased, the keylogger in Windows 10 is a deal breaker for me. Windows 7 does not have that, Microsoft use to have limits but seen Google and Apple raping people's privacy and decided it wanted in.

Linux is the only solution now.

Strangely the site the OP posted has an article on the front page

Migrating to Windows 10, Why and how you should do it where it says

All indicators point favorably in the direction of Windows 10, as it makes its claim as the next big operating system.
With the adoption of cloud-based services, additional security, increased mobility and flexibility and a straightforward migration process, Windows 10 promises to improve the experience for both end users and businesses alike.

I would think they'd go one way or the other with the whole "Windows is the devil" thing..

I would be more than happy to upgrade if there was a way to opt out of the spying and forced updates.

You use gmail, probably google.com too, yet you're worried about W10?

edit: wait, no I DO know how to react to it. Anyone who still spells it M$, yet still uses ANY of their products is probably a raging moron. You have had a decade to get off the platform since that term wasn't really used. That's on top of the 4 or so years where it was "cool" to spell it M$.

Honestly, I thought you were smarter than this. It's not so much that I'm mad at you, just disappointed.

The same updates are being pushed to W7.

Gonna fall back to XP?

You can disable this shit too and if you're super paranoid, block it at the router.

I'm on W10 and I love it.

That said, I have an absolute TON of shit disabled through Group Policy, Regedits, manual disables, uninstalls, and settings election. I don't fall for the typical stupid shit.

Overall, it's been pretty excelllent.

You can't dump Windows if you like to play games on your PC, otherwise I'd use Linux. I don't use google for searches, gmail, hotmail or any other of the email service providers that have NSA backdoors and/or harvest your information for profit. I have a facebook, but just for keeping in contact with old friends from school and the account uses a fake last name and doesn't have my employment/education information. I do what I can not to wind up recorded and stored in some database, but I like to play games on my PC so I have to use Windows and need W10 because of DX12.

It sucks that W10 is bloated with spyware. You have to use a huge pile of tweaks to the registry, deletion of system files, disabling of services, host file edits etc. to get rid of all the spyware, keylogging, telemetry crap. Then you still need to run a strong firewall, something like Tinywall and use your router to outright stop it relaying harvested data on your computer usage.

All that and it's still not 100% because the Windows update pipe is left open to Microsoft and they could just start using that. It's a disaster of an OS as far as privacy goes. It's outrageous that they infect it with all that garbage when you just want an OS. I don't care that they offered the upgrade for free, I'd have gladly paid for another license if it came without all the spyware. I think the freebie was a strategy play to get people in this psychology of 'I got a free OS, so who cares that my usage is being monitored by the OS and sent to MS'

I almost shit myself just now trying to remember how to use Twitter and Tumblr... No, I don't want a new OS. And take your system tray icon with you.

Maybe it's time for a Windows 10 SE? Heck, I would even pay for the upgrade, rather than free, if they removed the spying, data-collection, and Cortana.

It's not fear mongering when the threat is actually real.

What's worry some is the amount of people these days who don't even care about mass surveillance. People are actually ok with living in a world where their every move is traced and recorded and stored in a profile to be used against them in the future.
