it was mesmerizing.. simply put, the best movie i have ever seen in my life. im glad the movie really focused on the moral messages conveyed by the story, not just the story itself. like "hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. and no good thing ever dies" and patience. I will never forget it

That was the first DVD I ever bought. Definitely one of my top 3 movies of all time.

Probably #1.

I think Stephen King has proved beyond doubt numerous times that he is more than a horror writer.

I think one of the reasons the movie was so good is that it didn't deviate much from the book.

It's in a collection of short stories, I believe the collection was called Different Seasons.

And I believe the Whole Title was "Rita Hayworth or The Shawshank Redemption"

Yeah, they practically used the story for the script. Awesome.

And to be more precise, the story that the movie is based on was called "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" (although I hear the title has been changed in recent prints), and was published as a novella in a book called Different Seasons. This book featured 4 "novellas", each one corresponding to a season. Some may remember the recent release of a movie called "Apt Pupil." This was also a story in Different Seasons, as well as the best one from the book, called "The Body" which was made into the movie "Stand By Me." The fourth story wasn't that great in my opinion, but was definitely not bad.

King is definitely an awesome writer. Try the Dark Tower Series. My only gripe is that he has 4 books of 7 finished, and I'm impatient hehe.

I just saw it for the first time this weekend as well, and it was as good as everyone says. It doesn't deviate too much from the story, but where it does it actually furthers the plot.
Yes, it was a King short novel in Different Seasons, and its officially called "Rita Hayworth and the Shawkshank Redemption."
Also in that collection of stories is "The Body", which people might recognize as the movie Stand By Me, and Apt Puipl.
All 3 are great stories to read and show that he is capable of great writing that isn't horror. In case you couldn't tell, I am a big fan of his :).

Oh yah, if you enjoyed that movie I think you'd enjoy The Green Mile as well, movie and book. The movie was great, and I read the book afterwards and it was even better, in my opinion.

Your right. It was Rita Hayworth AND The Shawshank Redemption, not or...

BTW: They filmed Stand By ME (from THE BODY) here in Eugene Or. and the surrounding area.

I haven't read the Green Mile, but the movie was awesome.

I remember my first King book. It. I read it when I was 13. All I can say is wow. I'm glad I read it when I did because I could totally see myself doing what those kids were doing in their daily lives (building dams in the creek etc). It just added a whole other level.

Yah, I had to dig out my copy of Different Seasons, and sure enough there is no "The" in the title.

Do yourself a favor and read the book :). It is one of the best books I've ever read and I reccomend it to everyone. The style and emotion he conveys in it is so different than his horror genre that it is amazing.
I haven't read It yet but I have a fear of clowns, but then again who doesn't? :)

Do yourself a favour and do NOT see the movie for IT before you read the book. It's all messed up. Things that happen in the first few pages of the book happen in the middle of the movie and such. It's also really watered down and would spoil the book. I wasn't impressed with the movie, but people I've talked to who have seen the movie and not the book say that it was good.

I have read The Stand. Awesome. You have to read the complete and uncut version though (ie, not the original release).

Yah, I don't think you can call yourself a King fan unless you have read The Stand.
I've only read the uncut one, all 1000 pages of it or so. I was kind of disappointed in the ending but it sure was interesting getting there...

I saw part of It a long time ago, and I don't remember much from it... But I'm sure the book is a lot better than the movie...

Also, for Stephen King fans...I really recommend reading his book on writing..excellent book and very entertaining and informative...even if you never intend to write more than a sentence.
