Listen to Henry Phillips, then tell me comedians who play songs or instruments aren't funny.
Not funny at all *Youtubed him) there's a reason people like Eddie Murphy, George Carlin or Richard Pryor never played songs. I can't think of one hugely successful comic who's whole act consisted of playing songs or instruments. I guess some people out there must find this shit funny though *shrug*
Not "hugely successful" but what about flight of the conchords?
They are pretty damn successful, I watched part of their stand up special and part of 1 episode of their show. They're not comedy so they shouldn't fall under this thread.
Why aren't they comedy? You specifically mentioned comedians whose "whole act consisted of playing songs or instruments," but when one is mentioned, they aren't a comedy act? What are they, musicians? If so, any comedian whose whole act consists of music is by your definition not a comedian, so it's an impossible question to answer.
I think it's funny that QueBert used Eddie Murphy as an example of a comedian who doesn't use music when Eddie had a mildly successful singing career in the 1980s, including the hit single "Party All the Time," did parody songs with SNL and sang in the Shrek films. Sure, his act didn't consist solely of music, but saying that music wasn't a part of his career is just flat-out wrong.[/quote]
Wait, they're comedians? I didn't even smile I thought they were like some Simon & Garfunkle duo. If they're comedians it's really proof that people who try to play music while perform comedy are epic failures.
His singing career was not an attempt to be funny, Party All The Time was a serious song, and Eddie was making an honest attempt at crossing over. Eddie NEVER made music part of his comedy career, it was other people like the SNL writers and the Shrek people. Eddie would never have put it in his live act.
