Saw a digitally projected movie...

I went to a free screening of Last Samurai (awesome movie) and they were playing it on a digital projector using DLP technology. It was really cool because there were no marks on the screen or shaking or anything like that. I hope this technology starts to take over. Anyone know what media they use to store the movie?

that sounds really cool.

stored on ... hmm. probably not dvd huh. though wouldn't be totally surprised...

I have a DLP at home 🙂

as for the media that the theater stores it on, it is stored digitally i would assume on many hard drives

How much data do u think a two hour movie takes up?

the article i read about it said the movies ranged from 500-750 GB and is transmitted via a series of boeing satilittes. The cost is about 1/50th of sending a roll of celluloid film.

Damn that's some insane bandwidth! Can you find a link to the article?

i believe it was in forbes, i'll look around

you'd think they'd just encode them on tape and distrubute them the way they always have, through the film reel guys. they could re-use the tapes. i bet you could fit 1.2 terabytes on a tape the size of a film reel no problem

Um, i guess you've never seen a tape drive before?

And like they said, it's far cheaper to beam them through the satellite system. Of course the size is insane, but they would only need to beam it once (or a handful of times), and make sure those on the receiving end have their system set to record it. Cheaper, faster, and more reliable... and better quality.

saw Finding Nemo in DLP. Man, those underwater scenes were so bright and vibrant and CLEAN, they looked absolutely gorgeous. i LOVE DLP
