Saw a bad wreck at the velodrome tonight :(

Guy got tangled up somehow in the last turn of the sprint. Went over the top and came down on his head & neck - and didn't move. Cue the ambulance, lots of EMT/paramedics moving fast and they carried him off on a back board. His 9 or 10 year old daughter was right in front of us and hysterical.

Hope the guy is alright, but it didn't look good 🙁

This is why you don't bring your kids to the track.

This is why you don't do that kind of stuff period. You got a little one that needs you.

While I agree for the most part... I'm sure the "holier than though" of ATOT will feel different.

what's wrong with competitive cycling? every activity carries with it some amount of risk of injury.

Agreed. But only people who are well trained should do stuff like this.

Didn't take long for the "you are no longer allowed to take risks or enjoy doing things you love when you have kids" crowd to show up. Thanks, mommies.

I don't think I have ever seen any good crashes at the Velodrome, especially the ones that go over the top. It's a big drop.

I agree with this line of thought when you have others that depend on you, but cut him some slack. I wouldn't rate competitive cycling up there with skydiving and base-jumping.

true. i don't think the OP mentioned anything about the skill of the injured cyclist. sh1te happens to the world's best too. espn article

He should stay home and get a job sending SPAM to millions of email accounts on a daily basis instead of doing such a dangerous activity as a career choice.

Good thing he was okay...

OP: You either had really good seats or his daughter didn't get much of a deal on her comped seats....

Apparently the guy was pretty good - had won an earlier race. Here's the story from the paper: http://www.gazette.com/display.php?id=1318986&secid=3

Yea, I don't see it as particularly risky, or something you'd have to give up because you have a family. Probably no more dangerous the skiing, road cycling, etc.

The whole event was open to the public. I didn't even know it was going on, but the velodrome is in the park where the city fireworks display is. So the kids and I got there early to get parking and stopped by to watch a few races. My 4 year old was pretty shook up by seeing the guy go down and then not moving.

I haven't seen a race in a velodrome in a long time. I've ridden a lap or two of the Kissena velodrome in Queens, though, as part of the NYC Century. Fun stuff. 😀

Edit: and as for the comments on not going out and bike racing, please, don't be ridiculous. Plain old driving a car hither and thither is more dangerous than track racing!

Back in H.S. a friend and I climbed the fence at the Trexlertown velodrom in PA and rode some laps. Was very cool - those banks are STEEP. Tried a fixed gear bike once though - didn't get the appeal.
