And they were both being driven by women.

The first one was a blue one at a car wash where I getting my car washed. Some 50 year old chunky Korean woman all smug owned it.

The second one was a red one being driven to the supermarket by a trophy wife.

How do these people afford these cars?

Oh well, back to loafing. ;)

With proper financial planning, there is no reason (even on a modest income) why you shouldn't be able to afford one at that age if you wanted to spend your money that way.

Definitely. It's a shame that the vast majority of people are pretty crappy at handling their money. Give them $1,000,000 today and most would still die dead broke. :(

Oh well, I guess it keeps the drive-thru at McD's manned. :Q

Not only would they die broke, I'd put cash on their being bankrupt within 5 years.

Nice...saw one in Birmingham last week...and I found out that our closest family friends, the mom bought a new Porsche. I've yet to see it tho. (They're good people tho. They're just funny, is all...they showed up to another family friend's grad party with the father and both sons on their own Harleys, and the mom in the Porsche. :) )

Whats a "modest" income? Does this take into account kids, schools, elder care if needed, divorce, vacations, layoffs, home improvements.

Life must be good (on your side of the golf course).

What's a modest income?

Total household income under $100K (both people working).

$8K a year (a modest 8% if you make $100K, 10% if combined income is only $80K), 8% average interest rate, 30 years (I'll be 50 in 30 years):

$978,767

Simple math.
