Saving up to buy a car...

So thus far I have $6k saved up. I am hoping to have about $14 - 17k by mid Jan, at which point I will start searching high and low (btw the money quoted is on USD not Canadian Currency because I plan to buy the car from the USA and import it into Canada just cause it works out cheaper and can usually find cars that havent seen any salt/ dont have any rust)

Anyways I've been looking on www.autotrader.com and see that generally I can get an IS300 for about $15k with about 40 - 70k miles on them. Also Supras with about 80 - 120k on them. Now what i want to ask, is generally the price and condition i see on autotrader.com is it representative of what I can find in the local markets in the USA? And which would be a better purchase? I really wanted both cars for a while now, and am leaning more towards the supra, what do you all think?

EDIT- Go down a few posts and see all of the cars Im considering, Im in no rush obviously as I'll be purchasing in January, just trying to keep options open and see whats out there for my price range. Also the vehicle I get will be driving all year round not just summer so it will see winter but its no big deal I will be getting whatever I get rust proofed every year and winter tires for the winter.

Good luck on trying to find a Supra. They're hard to find, a lot are in the southern U.S. and most have high mileage. Expect to pay a pretty penny if you can find one.

Go with the IS300. A fairly nice car, and a hell of a better deal and easier to get ahold of.

The IS300 isn't that great of a car, I wouldn't bother with it. You looking for an NA MKIV Supra or a TT?

ya a NA MKIV Supra
Why do you care to get one? Sorry if that's a bit harsh, but why bother with that?

What exactly do you want to get out of this car? Both of those cars are RWD, is there a preference?

Honestly Ive just loved the way they've looked since I first saw one, thats all really, just personal preference.

Here is what the list of potential cars I would want (includes SUV's as well) & in no particular order)
S2000, Supra, IS3000, Highlander, Pilot

S2000 > IS300 in every way unless you're looking for back seats but you sound like a young guy so the S2000 is the way to go.
Also, its feasible to find a nice S2000 for ~$5K.

I'm kinda looking for a S2000 too.
I've been wanting a RSX type S for a while now but the 2000 been growing on me.

Ya i love the way the s2000 looks compared to the IS300 the reason I was looking at the IS300 is because I heard it used the same v6 as the supra? So it was just as turbo friendly? And Yes I'm 20 years old, and Cannot wait until its closer to Christmas cause I work in a commission based job and christmas season is the best 😀

And I think you meant that I could find a s2000 for about $15k correct? not 5k?

theres a few s2k's on autotrader that i've seen for about 17 or 18k with fairly low mileage, ~low 30's.

EDIT: my dad has an 06, and i havent had more fun in a car since.....maybe when i was 5 and driving those electronic plastic jeep things from toys-r-us.

Heh..I just might have to buy one!

If you're considering a Lexus IS300, then you owe it to yourself to consider the Infiniti G35 (an upscale Datzun 350z with a back seat).

I did look into them, but looks like they will only be in my price range with substantially more mileage

Sounds to me like you're young (under 25) in which case if/when you do manage to save up enough, I hope you've got $2k/year for full coverage insurance.

If you're concidering an IS300, then you also have to concider an E36 3 series. Whether it be an M3 (a nice one can be had for the same price as an IS300) or a 328i/is.

Handling is better than the IS300 and a 328 is pretty much neck and neck with an IS300 in a drag race.

Be careful with dropping a turbo on an IS300. I was just talking to a friend about that and you'd need to do a whole lot of drivetrain replacements. The stock stuff can't handle the HP I guess.

Wow. I would be driving a POS if I had to pay rates like that. Anything to lower that. I'm paying like $860/year for my '03 Grand Am with full coverage and I can't wait to turn 25 (next year) and get that reduced more.

ya I hate it too, but nothing I can do short of move out of this province, which I plan to once university is over. But until then I'll have to live with it, and now that I have found a good paying job, I think I can afford it

^^^^ im assuming he meant 15k, but thats still kinda low for an s2k.

Yeah I meant $15K.
You just said it yourself you've seen them for $17K/$18K and thats with low milage
If thats the case, you can easily talked them down to the ~$15K.
