saving my harddrive data

so my computer's no longer detecting one of my harddrives. another is on it's way from the not so local friendly computer store. i think i remember reading that freezing the harddrive will allow it to spin up again and allow me to transfer the data over to the new drive before i lose everything forever (unless it's alrady all gone forever). has anyone done anything like this to any degree of success? should i throw the hdd in the deep freeze right away, or will leaving it in there too long cause damage? etc.
any input?

thanks
