I know that there are programs to encode music to mp3s, is there a software that will let me have a dvd and save it to my hard drive? I have some movies that I love, and I would love to keep them right on my computer, so I don't need to keep going back and forth with them, and risk them getting scratched. TIA! :)

And before anyone complains, I wasn't sure what forum to post this in, so if you don't like it here, well all I have to say is pfffffffttt! ;)

You need to extract the VOB files & then (most likely, unless you just have sh!tloads of HD space to burn) encode them into divx or something of that nature.

However...

You'll be lucky if this doesn't get locked.

Eep, is this bad to ask about? I figured since I own the movies, it wouldn't be a problem to ask about it. If it is bad, sorry mods, and um, oops!

At least here in Finland it's legal to make backups of CD's you've purchased, but dunno about America.

Anyways... yeah, it's easy to just "rip" the VOB's from the DVD, but they take about ~6gigs/2 hour movie. If you want to save space, you have to encode them to DivX. For guides go here.

I know about Divx, dammit. :p But I don't plan on sharing mine over the net, so I didn't think it would be a problem. I just wanted to be able to watch movies, and not lug them all around the house, and if my hubby took it on the road with him, I could still see it, honest. Sheesh, you people are brutal. ;)

And yakko, yeah, thats me, GirlFriday the pirate. You have found me out. :Q Anyway, thank you mt081, thats exactly the help I needed. I appreciate it. :)

To be really picky, if your husband took your store bought copy on the road and was watching it as you watched your backup at home, then you are a pirate because you would be using two licenses. Sort of like installing windows on two machines at your house and using it at the same time.

I say this as I look at my spindle of recently released movies, like Behind Enemy Gates and Ocean's 11.

More information of this type is available at the inimitable vcdhelp.com, which also shows you how to make VCD and SVCD (video CD and super video CD).

And miniDVD, but I'm not sure what those are.

Sorry, GirlFriday - I actually thought you were joking

I'd suggest going to doom9.net and checking out the Gordian Knot encoding package. It's one download for a complete DVD -> DivX3 or DivX4 encoding package.

cheers, :)

Your spindle of poorly encoded, ultra cheesily recorded with a camcorder at the theater/with people in the way/ with coughing and laughing/ with only 3/4 of the movie 16:9 screen fitting on the 4:3 tape. Yep, everybody sure is envying you. ;)

I second Gordian's Knot. Keep a browser Window open to the guide and you'll have no problems. the only thing easier is DVDtoSVCD. You set everything up and oush the button. It takes longer though. Definintely an overnighter and maybe a bit more.

Does the encoder support SMP? I could set it up to run on my dual TBirds...

Don't know about SMP and don't care. :p As I don't have it. :p:p But you can check at doom9.net. I know there are encoders that support SMP. They get something like 42 fps. Which would give you an encode in less than 2 hours. Maybe 1.

I was meerly pointing out that while I was accusing her of being a pirate, I don't consider that wrong or bad.

And if you think every movie released is as you described, you need to get a new supplier of movies. They really don't look all that bad when you are getting copies from the VHS tapes being sent to reviewers or screeners being copied from the reels...There is no audience involved, so I doubt you hear much coughing and laughing.

Lighten up. It was a sarcastic joke to let her know I was just kidding around...

if you own em, and don't want to degrade the quality by divxing, just rip the vobs as other people have said. s adly there isni't a way to rip the dvd complete with menus and everything else. i've only been able to get plain movies, and sometimes i have to manually set aspect ratio. weird thing is windvd doesn't let me choose languages when opening vobs, let alone subtitles. that blows:(

ah yes, i've used it since my laptop has no dvd drive:p only thing is that it really isn't for beginners, if you know what your doing then gknot works pretty damned well. set everything to idle and you can play games/work while encoding just fine. well you might crash on win 9x:)
