My school district is wanting to start a website that will be given to the National PTA once it is set up. Problem is that this site is owned by a company that is just trying to make money off of the name.

I know that there were alot of stories about squaters snagging corporate names etc... I don't remember how that turned out. It seems pretty stupid that this company bought a block of these just to sell. They put a BS search engine up and that is it.

Unless you have a trademarked name and can prove they're using it to infringe on your business... Nope. Your only recourse is to pay them.

seems like a generic name. Why do you think your school district or anybody else has a right to a particular name as generic as saveourschools? Why don't you add a district name like saveourXXXXschools.com.

Because it's going to the National PTA.

Pay them off, it's your only option.

You have no more right to it than they do.

I don't think that my district or the national PTA has any special rights to a name. What I take issue with is people buying domains to simply resell. Especially names that can be used by schools that don't have the money that corporations do to go out and pay a rediculous amount for a domain name. If this place actually used this domain, I wouldn't have issue with it.

Dude. Its a business. The name is a commodity. They thought of it before you did. You have to pay them for the right to use it. Its no different than anything else.

Just pick a different name like savingyourschools our OurSchoolsOurFuture or something else that's available.
