Can you return it?

I think the problem is in your "timing". Unless of course you got it dirt-cheap.

The next gen videocards are almost out - and they should work just fine for next year's games. Of course, if you get them right when they are released, you'll pay $400. Wait a few months and that same card can probably ne had for $250 or so dollars (if the past is any indicator of the future).

If I were to get a videocard NOW, I'd opt for a Radeon 8500 which can be had for around a hundred bucks and will certainly be sufficient until the next gen of games. Your GeForce4 should be fine through next year even if it is a bit slower and doesn't have DX9 support . . .

Actually when they FIRST came out there was a Hot Deal for $250 . . . it's taken well over six months for them to come down to their current price of around $100 . . . of course, when they FIRST came out - the drivers were buggy (so many people haven't forgiven ATI yet). :D

It's even worse for CPUs - you can get Intel's latest and greatest for around $600 (or O/C your $140 Intel CPU to the same performance levels). :)

Get over it Desktopsilver!! There ARE lots of good games worth playing that need a good video card.
There ARE more games coming out all the time.

Now quit freaking out and think rationally. ;)

See if you can return your card for a refund. Get a sub-$100 Radeon 8500LE for a card that's plenty awesome now, and will play tomorrow's games adequately.
If you can't return it, well... you're stuck with a very good card that is FASTER than a Radeon 8500 and will still play tomorrow's games just fine.

It won't be "oldschool" for a year AT LEAST.

I like my Ti4200 - it lets older games look even better - I can now play games at Geforce2 resolutions, but I can do so with FSAA enabled, and with better anisotropic filtering.

shoulda coulda woulda if.......

are all just ways of beating yourself senselessly for trying to justify a purchase ;)

now let's see
you could have spent 300.00 on games and been mad that you didn't buy that video card since the games would have played so much better/faster than it does now
you could have bought a ps2 and had no games to play or maybe one if you went cheap;)

or you could enjoy each game you buy from now on as it plays beautifully on your new video card;)

either way you end up going good luck oh and take a deep breath you made a good investment even if your timing isn't right you won't have to spend the money later upgrading when the games do come out and you will be used to the settings and tweaks that get it looking just right .

hope this helps
mike

Anyhow, don't beat yourself up, DTS. It's ALWAYS a bad time to buy computer parts. There is ALWAYS something better coming out within a few months.

desktopsilver, you have a classic case of "buyer's remorse".

First of all, do you WANT to keep it?

Secondly, [/b]is it returnable?[/b]

Third, IF you return it, DON'T pay $178 for a Radeon 8500!!!! They are in the $100 range now - search Hot Deals (and there will continue to be great prices on it and Nvidia cards as the 9700 is released).

Finally, in the long run, you won't be badly hurt by your current purchase - it should be just as useful as your old card was for just as long. ;)

Really finally - my last words on this subject - LEARN a lesson from your 'mistake'. RESEARCH your purchases BEFORE you (impulse) buy. That is the most valuable result of your purchase.

there won't be any new games until next year? BS. theres got to be something in the pipe... for all you know, DNF and TF2 will go gold next week. :p

and my cancelled dell preorder for the 8500 was 219.92. now that was a hot deal... well, after i saw the benches and that it wasn't going to ship for another month or whatnot it wasn't. but now the 8500 is faster than my ti200 (until i OC the dickens out of it, that is).

My 70$, 14-month-old MX 400 is still coping with the stuff thrown at it.

It's not 60 fps at max settings, but who needs that.

What on earth are you talking about? Battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournmanet 2k3 come out next month. Warcraft III and NWN both came out recently. Icewind Dale II is out this month. Medieval: Total War and Age of Mythology are both slated to be out this year. NOLF 2 and Lionheart as well. There are countless games coming out.

Now that I see your real point, I must reply: "nonsense". :p

In my opinion, I think the best time to get a video card is right when the Generation after it is released. For example, to get the Radeon8500 when the 9700 comes out in a few months. This is because they usually drop in price at that time, and they're perfectly functional to play the newest games for at least a year-year and a half.

The 9700 is due next week (by Aug 26th).

From Tom's - Interview With Tim Willis Of id Software

Doom III is targeted mainly at the GeForce 3 series cards and the Radeon 8500 cards. Other cards will be able to run the software, but of course the graphics will be scaled down from those cards on the target platform.

Maybe you're right and the 9700 and NV30 are overkill. Maybe I'll be getting a $90 8500 next month . . . maybe not. ;)

:)

Just remember to get the 128MB Radeon . . .
80MB textures are not uncommon for Doom III.

And the final little nugget:
Due to the complex nature of the graphics fidelity that we are trying to present in Doom III, the game is more video card dependent than CPU dependent.

ok and what about the fact that intel ,amd ,n'vida, redeon,,,,,,,,,,,are all letting sony and microsoft, and nintendo ,,,sway titels from us,,i paid 300 dollars for a 4600ti vid card ,i could have had a whole sys for that much,,,realy that amount of an asking price for a vid card should "have us in the drivers seat for what ever software titel comes out",,,,,,,,not be victoms to a sour marketing (overseas i might add) sceem,,,,,,,that is pure bs...please dont take our titels from us because you feel that gives your system a marketing advantage(now and in future) otherwise we should demand to pay (hardware+ labor cost of card only prices)of around 90-100$,,,,,,,,,,seeing as they wont step to the plate to insure full title availability,,,and just go to sleep and rake in proffits,,,,,,that is bs

Bah, who cares about ultra jaw dropping graphics that blow a hole through your wall? If the game's truely great, fun, and action packed, then you might not even notice the graphics.
