i just started trying to train my left hand to do the mousing in hopes of reducing the chance for repetitive stress/strain injuries.

another option is to switch off between a trackball and a conventional mouse. that way, you're not always using the same hand/wrist/finger movements. i like my mx510 and cordless trackman combination.

i don't game, but wouldn't it be cool to be an ambidexterous gamer??

I'd imagine that trackballs are actually worse, since you're using your index finger to do all the work, and in an awkward position at that.

If you use a mouse right, it's very comfortable, even for hours.

it's not that it's uncomfortable for me. the trackball i use has a ball that is controlled by your thumb. with convention mice, you rarely use your thumb (unless you have thumb buttons). so for me, my trackball gives my wrist a break while utilizing my thumb. call it psychological.

in general, convention mice put a lot of strain on your wrists, and over time, you can develop carpal tunnel even with proper ergonomics. overuse will lead to damage with anything.... the only thing you can do is slow down the process, which is what i'm trying to do.
