My roomate Dave has a dimension 8100 that he wants to upgrade. For those of you who dont understand the horror lets put it this way..socket 423, 1.3g p4 and 256 mb pc800*gag* I quickly decided it would probably be cheaper to buy a new mobo/processor and some DDR, considering the insane RDRAM prices adn the fact the those wierd 423 to 478 converters scare me. He mostly uses it for web browsing and some heavy-duty photoshop editing. Recommendations? cost is of prime importance....

And you will need a new case also. Dell case is proprietary. With budget in mind, how about the Frys $69 AMD motherboard/cpu combo, a stick of 512meg PC3200 Mushkin from newegg ($72 or something like that) and an Antec Sonata for $60 after mir (fry, if its still on)
 
depends on if its 4x or like 2x AGP video card...if its 4x, it should work on just about anything...i think...
but.. there is the bandwidth issue.. nothing is certain though..
 
Had a similar system but a 1.9ghz p4 and 512 of pc800 (rest is pretty much the same, including gfx card). Made a completely new system heh. Nothing can be salvaged sadly.
