save broken os by boot on another comp?

So my windows 2000 OS just went poop,
I've tried the fix features with the rescue disk and all.
I've also tried to reinstall just the os (so i don't lose my stuff) but it goes to the "loading bar" screen where w2k loads, and it goes something like "file is missing C:/winnt/system32..."
I am wondering, is there some way for me to hook up that hard drive to another computer which is working perfectly?
i mean i was wondering how the system would know to boot off my good hd with good OS instead of the bad one?
how could i go about this?
Thanks

You can't boot of this drive unless you fix Windows. If you connect it as a spare on another system it will boot - as normal - off THAT systems drive not your drive. You can then copy your data files from your drive.
