Well, I'm not sure if this is permitted, but I would like it if any admins would just let this slide. This past Sunday, I went to church to listen to the sermon that my pastor had set up for us (youth group). Well, we eventually got to the point where he began talking about Sudan, a part of the world that is infested with hate and problems. One of these problems is rape, which many of you guys might be aware of.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&...WYA%3A2005-37%2CGWYA%3Aen&q=Sudan+Rape

He then went into a story of where a little girl, an innocent young girl that simply wanted a taste of education, asked her mother for $4 so that she could buy school clothing to attend school. Her mother, who was behind her daughter's decisions, took the act of walking down to the nearest field that night in hopes of working to earn the money her daughter dired so much for. Well, as she was walking, she passed a group of men in the army, who decided to have a little fun by shooting her legs, where they watched her struggle to her feet. They then decided to "toy" with her, which eventually lead to a bullet to her head.
I thought about this yesturday, and couldn't help getting the idea out of my head that we are blessed with all of these necessities that we hardly use. An example of this that I was able to come up with are video cards. Video cards, which cost all the way up to 600$, are only helpful when playing games. Heck, even a 100$ card could get anyone by their gaming needs for maybe a year. I am in no way saying anything bad about people that have worked hard for their money, but I just can't help but say that with 600$, a whole community in third world countries can be changed. I am a college student, with small amounts of money, but I figure that if I can show people that I am willing to give up something small for such a big outcome, maybe some of you others will see that there are people dying out there, when we are sitting at home, spending thousands on computer parts and other things that we only purchase for their fancy name.
Thus, I am asking that you think twice about going out to eat or buying that Lacoste shirt. Eating at home and donating the money that you would have spent will feed families for days, giving them hope that there are people who actually care. If you guys do contribute through a church or other form of rescue mission, I will doubling your guys' money and to prove this, I will talk this over with my pastor, where he can send any of you guys that are doubting me more information.

Btw, I am selling my X850XT, Barton 2400 Mobile, Barton 3200, Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, TI4200, and a Maxtor 60 Gig HD on ebay, in which 75% will go towards funding the less benefit. I will prove this with a check that is written out to the program my church is associated with (30 Hour Famine), and will even go to the extent of recording it and putting it up online if I have to...

Mmkay.. i don't trust stuff like this. And its not only that, i know for a fact that no matter how much money or help you give to the poor, they don't do anything with it. Back in eastern europe, we have thousands of Turks living on the streets begging for money, and using their children. The goverment gives them a monthly salary more than my grandma's retirement money. And my grandma has worked hard ALL OF HER LIFE! Yet, they just spend that money on alcohol or gold (i dont know why they are obsessed with gold).

Plus the church is a mafia.

Ok... this is not turning the way that I wanted it to. I literally didn't tell you guys to give your money to help others, just wanted you guys to know that there are people starving out in the world when we are spending 600$ on pieces of plastic. I seriously respect your guys' opinions since you all worked hard for what you have but think about it..., do you think that children deserve to be placed on the streets where they are raped and abused? Also, I agree that churches can be scandelous when it comes to money, but that is why I asked you guys to make donations to foundations (like 30 Hour Famine). I am surprised that many of you are not worried that our world is in jeopardy. Seriously only a matter of time before something really big happens... Heck, we have freaken 10 year olds running around with guns and knives...

Also, please keep unncessary side comments out of this thread, it only makes it harder for the people that are actually interested in making a difference in one's life. This is also posted in the "Off-Topic" section so I don't see anything wrong..

I think you have good intentions but don't expect positive response from ATOT.

Agreed... the story sounds too made up..
$4 for clothes doesn't sound like a lot to us, but I believe the average annual income in Sudan is somewhere around $350. So, she's expecting to make 4 days' worth of pay in one night? How are details about the soldiers known? "Young innocent girl" in Sudan is going shopping for clothes?

Sorry, but even if it's true, it sounds too much like those sob stories used to get people to cough up their money. Personally, I'd prefer to donate my money where I can see that it's going to have a positive effect upon people's lives; not where I have to reply on 2nd hand or 3rd hand sources to know it's doing some good. I also like to volunteer my time. During the next 2 months I have the following activities lined up:

Helping put on a sweetheart breakfast for senior citizens on Valentine's day.
Sponsoring and organizing a bloodmobile for the Red Cross
Raising money for the March of Dimes
Volunteering to assist students in organizing a career day for all students in my county
Raising money for a hospice program
I just recently helped host a pizza dinner to raise money for the United Way.
Oh, and special olympics... and who knows what other projects I've forgotten about.

And, for most of those projects, I spend a minimum of $25. So, I don't need stories about people in some foreign country to make me feel bad enough to donate my money. Nor do I seek the opportunity to simply write out a check and feel that I've done enough. What I do, however, attempt to do is determine how much my efforts are going to help. Through the bloodmobiles I've organized at my school, 100's of pints of blood have been donated - this clearly has a positive impact on the lives of many people.

Ask yourself - so what if this girl goes to school - where is that going to get her? She's in Sudan (I'm sorry to be this blunt.) It sucks there. Tossing some money at the problem is NOT going to fix the problem. My contention is that the amount of help that the money provides is minimal at best.

(not meant to be a flame or thread-crap... if such were the case, like the morons above, I wouldn't have typed so much)

People generally get the government they deserve.

Charity to people in corrupt nations often just makes it easier for the dictators and warlords stay in power, because their victims take the charity instead of sacrificing to earn their freedom.

You can't easily impose a better life on people from the outside when they aren't willing to earn it themselves. Look at Iraq: the people there took the removal of Saddam as an excuse to return to the tribal conflicts of decades and centuries past.

That's why I donate to Northwest Harvest, which supplies food banks in Washington state that help many people that are still trying to make their life better. Charity to Africa is pouring a bottle of water into the sand.
