I hate to say it, but there are so many healthy dogs waiting to be adopted... Saving this one just means dooming another one to die. Euthanizing this dog now means the same number of dogs survive and get adopted, and it costs everyone $3,000 less.

On the flip side, $3,000 can rescue a lot of kids from a life of slavery and sex trade...

I'll take the flames now. I prefer medium rare with a nice char on the outside.

on the other hand trafficking figures used by advocacy groups tend to be built on bs. recent inquiry into the uk numbers found far less than were claimed.

i'd rather save the cheerleader.

I'll save the princess.

But I'm okay with any true charitable cause. You have to carefully investigate these organizations, though, to make sure the money is going where they it is going. It's always best to give personally and through your own person-to-person effort if you can.

harsh, but true

And that's the hard part as a dog owner who seriously loves dogs.

While we see them as so much more than just another animal, and we want to humanize them and treat their lives as if they were another human.. they are still just another animal.

I say the same thing about humans: euthanize the weak ones. :p But, I am in the minority with that opinion.

But while pet dogs deserve so much, you have to look at it responsibly.
Hell, the owner of a dog that has such a terrible affliction, should look at it positively. While you may never get to see what kind of positive benefit that one specific dog may bring to a home, by giving it the treatment of euthanasia to end needless suffering, you are afforded the opportunity to adopt another rescue animal and prevent a needless loss of life.

It sucks, but it's the same whether the dog is 15 or not even 1. If it has a condition that ensures the dog is always suffering, do what is right and end the suffering peacefully.

k. No argument from me since I didn't cite any figures, and because I don't think either of us would dispute that trafficking does exist and is an important issue.

The site I linked has a report on numbers that I haven't read: http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2008/

If you have the study on the UK numbers it would be interesting to see if the conclusions are comparative.

I like Charity Navigator as a source for validating charities (the one I linked is a 4 star charity, highest rated). Since I tend to prefer third-world initiatives it's hard to give personally.
