We might go there for a day with family. Kids are 7 and 5. Wondering if there are any mansions to visit or any good museums that kids would like (basically means no art museums).

Any good places to eat for dinner?

Thanks for helping me plan my summer vacation!

River Street and historical tours are not gonna be fun for the kids. Plan on finding the beach or you will be disappointed. River Street can be quite fun for adults but kids, not so much. The touristy restaurants are a major disappointment as well. The ones without themes will be your best bet.

And don't have high expectations.

I can remember going to Savannah when I was younger. I think we visited the historic part of the city and it was ok but I agree that the kids probably won't have much fun unless maybe you do a carriage ride or something. I don't know if this is still common or not but when we where there, the historic district had a horrid smell to it. I think it was from a papermill that was across the river perhaps. I don't know if anybody else has experienced this....and it may not even be like that anymore.

When are you going? If tomorrow, you are gonna get stuck in one of the largest St. Pattie's day events in the nation. Good luck with that :)

As for the smell, I was there last year and don't remember it being present. I believe that papermill has joined the rest of our industrial brethren and been outsourced to China.

I've always enjoyed Savannah. Though, I've never brought children along when I visited.

Since the town was originally laid out on a grid, it is very easy to walk almost anywhere.

If you stay at the Hyatt, you can get a River View Room. And the older area down by the river has some decent shopping. Though, I don't know how much the little ones would like that... I can't remember if they had any 'pirate' attractions or not... They used to have decent river tours...

I always like the 8th air force museum over by 95. Don't know how it would work with the little ones though...

You might enjoy the Railroad Museum.

For a beach experience, a day trip to Tybee Island should work.

Best of luck.

Try the Hidden Gardens tour. But, again, Savannah proper has little for kids. Tybee Island for the beach for the kids, maybe tour Fort Oglethorpe. Outside that, not much kid stuff. Sav's tourist industry is much more geared towards teens and older.

This is a summer trip I am planning.

Sounds like it is a pretty shity place to go.

savannah is an amazing city full of history and great places to eat. but i have to agree with the others, i don't think i'd take my kids. it's more of a couples weekend trip away from the kids.

I was in Savannah, at some Marriot or Hilton in a nice section. The client recommended we stayed on-site. It was one of the few I stayed at without complementary breakfast.
