For any owners of these cards, Savage News has a petition up to get Via to release updated drivers. Who knows if it will do any good, but it can't hurt. I'd sure like some better Win2K drivers for my Viper II.
I think it is time for Savage2k owners to move onto happier pastures instead of beating a dead horse. Kyro 2, GF MX are not expensive at all, and have great hardware and support. Just my .02 cents
be that as it may, i can only spend so much upgrading my PC, and the processor is next up. i also think that time has shown drivers CAN make quite a difference in performance...
I concur with rickn. S4 was a sweet chip in its day despite being horrendously delayed but it is time to move on. The S4's drivers did not require any updates and it rarely showed up in game readme's lists of known issues (unlike "competing" chips). Sure, it would have been nice to have equal performance under W2K but its not reasonable to expect a lot of money to be spent on a product that is no longer viable. I would have expected some updates since the 3D core was used in integrated chips along with the S2000's 2D but I guess this means they are replacing those soon too.
The thing is, according to some information the people who have started the petition received, updated drivers already exist, but have not been released (and will not be). It also makes a request for them to release the register specs (so SOMEone can update the drivers).
how would I love to see updated drivers....when I first got my Savage 4, I was so happy...every game ran great...kick-ass card...anyways...open gl blows for this card (at least for me) in many games like unreal engine based games (S3 MeTaL sucked ass) and in hl/cs/tfc/other mod it would crash after playing a bit and in direct 3d my fps suck...oh yeah....ff7 blows on this card for me....errmm....basicially any game that I have has problems with my card...and a lot of my games are like a year old or older...anyways...this gives me the impression that columbia will suck ass because of lack of good driver support and many other people who have this card will probably have the same sour taste that I do...if they got updated drivers....why won't they release them? I'd imagine the driver release would be like 100 megs because of all the bugs with this card...
Good luck, don't count on the drivers exist theory, that has been mulled over for years, if they have drivers and don't release them , thats because they are worse than the ones you have now.
Good post Frog. But I doubt S3 is going to do anything about it. nVidia is just killing every single competitors in the video card industry. That's why S3 is just fading out of the picture.
I was a Viper II owner myself. I loved the card but had to sell it due to incompatibility issues. I would like to see their new driver releases for their cards but honestly I believe this is not going to happen.
