My sister is looking to buy a new laptop. I went to best buy to look at some stuff and I see a lot of computers with 16 MB Savage video cards. What is this? How does it perform to the geforce2go 32 MB or the ATI radeon mobility? Any links to reviews on this chipset? Thanks.

I had my hands on an IBM thinkpad with a p3-1.13Ghz, i830 chipset, with a Savage 16MB (i forgot the model, but it was for sure some type of Savage 16MB video).

I fired up counterstrike on it, 640x480, and it was peaking around 50 fps, sometimes going down to 10fps.
I fired up jedi Knight II, 640x480 with pretty low settings, and surprisingly it was getting about the same fps as counterstrike.

Bottom line, it wasnt a stellar performer, certainly not to the level of Modile radeon 7500s and geforce4 gos.

Have exactly the same issues as desktop equivalents of the Savage line had in terms of speed, compatibility and quality.
In all honesty, I WOULD PAY EXTRA to get my hands on an ATI or nvidia based graphics laptop.

Well most of the Savage units you see in notebooks are either SavageMX or IX on oooooold chipsets (Intel BX or MX mostly), or they are chipset integrated shared memory ProSavage units in VIA chipsets.

for 2d or desktop using, it shouldn't be any huge differences between radeon and gforce go series, may be a little slower but shouldn't be bad at all.

for gaming, i won't even think about it.
