Saturn SC2 ~ Hot or Not?!

A rich friend of my sister is getting a brand new Pontiac for her birthday, and may want to get rid of her '95 Saturn SC2. When I asked, she gave me a figure of $2000, but has to talk it over with her parents. This is $2,500 below the kelly blue book price on a '95 with 95,000 miles. You'll be hard pressed to find a '95 model SC2 of any milage for less $3000 bucks.

Here's a picture of the identical '96 model SC2. It's a very nice looking car in my opinion, especially considering the price. Who knows, I may be able to drive it a year and resell at a profit. Then again it might break down 3 months down the road. I'm not going about this in a blind manner ... I'll make sure to have it checked out by our mechanic before deciding whether to buy it.

Consumer reports rates the car as a little above average overall. Epionion ratings aren't too bad - link.

So, for a first car is this a good choice?! I want to hear what others have to say. A friend of mine has something against Saturn, and was totally opposed to my buying this car. On the other hand most Saturn SC series owners seem happy with the car. 🙂 I came here for a second, well actually third opinion on the car. SC2, Hot or Not?

is it an SL2 or an SC2 the picture you linked to was the SC,

The SL2 is a homely looking sedan.

AHH I meant SC, er lemme change my entire post now

Ah ok,

Looks like a decent car, for $2k I think it would be a steal. That said, I'd wait until she talks to her parents. My bet is she didn't really know the blue book value of the car and just said $2k off the top of her head ($6,500 bluebook seems high for a 7 year old car with 95k miles imho). Or $2k could've been what the dealer was offering on the trade in.

If you're looking for something that's going to be somewhat refined, then look elsewhere. However, if you're looking for a car that does everything it's supposed to and will probably not let you down (assuming that the car has been maintained decently), then the SC2 will be a good little car. It will probably keep running for another 60,000 miles without any big problems and potentially many more miles than that. Also, since the car's body is plastic those little dings that accumulate on first cars are less likely to happen. Would I ever buy a Saturn for myself? No, but that's only because I don't care for the styling or the interiors, from a purely functional standpoint the car doesn't have anything wrong with it.

test drive it first

i drive alot of saturns, and tehy are not comfortable or good to drive, at all

but for <3k, you can't go wrong

Oops that was another mistake on my part. The blue book value is over $4500 with the features this car has. It has power everything, tape player (will replace with CD), and a rear spoiler!

🙂

Hot. Buy it if you can. If you like it, keep it. It should last awhile if you take care of it. A friend of mine has about 198,000 miles on his without a lot of problems.

Update: She talked with her parents, and they seem okay with her selling it, but not at such a low price. She is asking $2500 now. If everything checks out, it still seems like a great deal on a decent car.

You can't beat the price, I'd buy it, and since you need a car, keep it for now. You should be able to sell it for what you paid for it a year from now.

Sounds like a good deal, but I'd have it checked out by a mechanic before you buy it. Specifically, have him check the alternator, the serpentine belt and tensioner, and the motor mounts, both upper and lower. I have a '95 SL1 and those have been the big maintenance items for my car... If it checks out I'd say it's a great deal!

Well, I have a 2002 Saturn SC2, and the car buffs will certainly give you crap for it. But for a point A to point B car, I really like it. One of the gripes about Saturn is that they haven't changed their engineering since they've been introduced. If that's the case and you'd be picking up a car similar to mine, for $2500, it would be a steal.

Definitely go for it, even if you only get a year (should be much more), it would be worth it.
