Are there satelitte systems aside from DTV and Dish Network that don't require a monthly service to activate? I was looking around and found this device..

This unit is designed to receive free digital satellite TV and Radio programming from free-to-air satellite transponders.

I'm absolutely brand new to all this, and not sure exactly what it all means really, but can someone explain how it all works?

Nothing legal.

If you are looking for an illegal box, it's just like cable theft with some hefty penalties. Plus illegal activities bring the mods running for you with a bucket of poisonous spiders, eek!

Free-to-Air recievers are not illegal. They just pick up free satalite signals. There is software out there that is illegal but all satalites can be hacked and made illegal. I have a pansat 2500A and it works very good. I get lots of channels, over 1000. Just make sure you read up on it before you purchase one.

Good question BUMP and no illegal stuff was hinted IMO. Back in the early 80 we had a massive dish and everything was free after purchase of all the equipment. Perfectly legal. Not sure if this is possible anymore..again bump.
