I've been considering installing a satellite radio receiver/head unit in my car...

Do any of you have one? How does it sound compared to FM radio?

And most important of all, is it worth it?

my parents have one. it is ok. it cuts out when you go under a bridge and if you are parked in the garage or right next to a building. some really rainy days it won't pick up either. the music selection was average at best.

IMO it isn't worth the monthly fee. unless you live in Timbuktu and can't pick up any radio stations.

I think the (true) alternative rock station and jazz alone is nearly worth it. It also sounded a lot better to me, though I would also like to know the specs compared to radio. I suppose it depends on what kind of music you like, but the selection seemed pretty good to me.

if you have digital cable, you know exactly what i'm talking about, but...i'll describe...

With digital cable, you get something like 100 "digital radio stations" on your TV. Of those 100, there were only two that i'd even consider listening to. Everything else sucked. I have yet to try Sirius or XM and really want to, but i'm willing to bet that it's going to be just like digital cable.

that's what i'm saying. sure you get 100 channels. but i would only listen to, at most, 10. so that leaves me 90 channels i am never going to listen to. is that worth the monthly cost? i don't think so.

It's worth it to me. Look at the selection XM offers and if you don't think it's worth it to you for $9 a month than don't get it. Simple as that.

So far I haven't found it to be cd quality, but it is definitely better than FM.

Also, I installed my antenna INSIDE the car and I still get great reception. The only time it goes out is when I'm in the garage with the door closed. It works fine under bridges, etc. in my area.

Hmmm...

Well, we all know that DSS is easily hacked. I wonder how long it will take with satellite radio?
