satellite net connection - good or bad?

I live in one of those areas where DSL nor cable connections are available. I did some reading on satellite connections but it doesn't look too promising. Stuff about bad weather either knocking out the connection or lowering performance substantially.

Anyone have any experience with them or know anyone who has? Think it's worth it? I'm really going crazy with downloads on a dial-up at 3.0 K/sec. :disgust:

The problem with a satellite connection is that while you do get blazing fast download speeds, you would still need another ISP for uploading. You cannot upload data to a satellite for security reasons. The net result would be much more higher costs which you should want to take into consideration.

Thanks, Bigg. The stuff I read didn't even mention that! Guess I'll keep bugging Verizon. Watching my downloads is like watching grass grow. :| :|

Yucky, thank you for asking me to shut up. That was very polite and respectful of you. You need to realize that we all are trying to help each other out here. Well, I'm sorry I didn't know about Starband but you could've at least addressed me nicely. Have a ncie day, pal. :)

There is two satellite available now which eliminates the ISP needed to upload with older satellite connections...checkout starband I am looking into it because hell would have a higher probability of freezing over then me ever being able to get broadband :(

I think they rule-A$$ compared to dial up. I went in Radio Shack and they had one hooked up(they where avertising for MSN service) so I decided to sneak on download.com and 3dfiles.com to d/l some stuff :).

Man was I blowed away I d/led 1.4mb in like 40 some secs. The download speed was rangeing from 20k sec to 30k. I would love to have it since I also dont have DSL or cable but it was gonna cost around $400-$500 for the stuff and for it hooked up plus $40-$50 a month. If it wasnt for the hookup and modem charges I would jump on it like staink on $H!T :).

I would recommend it if you d/l alot of stuff and have the money to spare. It didnt seem much faster while surfing the net though for some reason? I would go to Radio Shack if I where you they might have one on display.

Satellite isn't half bad from what I've heard except for gaming...your pings will be horrendously high to say the least...depends what you use your connection for I guess.

Satellite connections are great if you're just doing surfing, downloading, general internet tasks, etc.. satellite connections are a no-no if you're a gamer because the raw latency from the satellite to your dish is roughly 500ms. Adding this onto the network latency, you get a minimum ping of ~550ms.
