Satellite Latency Question....

Hello All....

I know that Satellite latency is supposed to be high, and not really for use with FPS games and the like. But what about games like Diablo II which are not quite as intense?

I currently use a hybrid cable modem (phoneline upstream, cable down) for my internet access. It is basically unuseable for games like Q3, but I have no problem (or little problem) with diabloII.

Will the same be true of a satellite modem?

Will I be able to share the connection with other computers on my network using my SMC router? (I hear that the satellite companies require the use of a proprietary modem that is connected via USB).

I really don't know for sure, but I would think that you could stick a NIC in the computer with the satellite modem, and use ICS or SyGate or something like that to share the connection.

Yes, you can share it. I got my starband box yesterday... getting it installed monday. Lantency will be a problem.. I expect to see occassional problems too. I will be keeping my dialup account.. and may setup it for uploads... To share it you will have to put a network card in and set it up as a gateway to the internet. You can use windows 2000 or windows 98. Although, I would not dare use win98 as my internet box... Anyhow, if you are interested in how it goes next week for me post your interest here and I will let ya know how it goes.

I have great interest... Try some Diablo II on it if you get the chance. :)
