Satellite Internet Users, Hardware Question

We have to go to satellite. We moved from the city and a 3MB connection to the country and 19 - 28K. 🙁
Do any of the satellite providers rent the equipment?
All charge a set of fee as per the FCC (according to them) and all seem to sell rather than rent the hardware. I hate to make an $1100 - $1500 investment on something that I may end up not liking.
I can get 1MB for $100 per month on a business line (up to 5 users but it will just be 2) or 500KB for $60 a month (1 user).

For satellite users, who do you use and how do you like it?

My on line gaming days are over at any rate. 🙁

According to the Telco, we are too far out for ISDN. We live in the boonies.
I see some equipment on Ebay. I'll have to see which of the Sat. companies let you use your own equipment.
 
We have a guy who telecommutes from his farm, using satellite. It works OK but there is lag, and they force you to use "web acceleration" (compression) that has caused some odd incorrect behavior on websites now and then.

Given the cost, it might be better/cheaper to find out if you can still buy those "shotgun" dialup modems with drivers to bind 2 modems / 2 phone lines into a single virtual channel.

This was just 2 ordinary dialup lines with no special service, plus 2 almost-normal dialup modems running at once and dialing your ISP twice. That might be what ISDN is doing behind the scenes (binding 2 wires) but this was user-controlled.

On second thought, we had ISDN at my old job back in '99 and uptime was lousy (random dropouts daily needing many reboots of the router) so satellite might not be so bad.
 
I use starband here, since we are so remote we don't even have a phone line, we didn't have much choice. We (the business where I live and work at) had to buy the equipment, but we were early adopters and there wasn't anything available as far as used equipment, so I never looked into it. A friend of mine is also running satellite, and he managed to buy everything off of Ebay for a good price, and is using 3 Rivers as a provider. He is pretty happy with his setup.

 
i had a satellite setup for a year out here in BFE. but the company paid for it, something like $300 or $500 a month. it was decent, but VPN'ing in to work was not fun, the delay to/from the satellite made working via remote desktop unfun

what you need is a WISP , wireless LOS ISP. a guy in the itty bitty town here started his own dial up ISP because we don't even have any local POPs for the big ISPs and he has expanded to wireless service. it is good. good enough that i got sunrocket VoIP running over it so i can keep my $88 month i have been getting raped by Sprint Local for POTS service.

anyways, tachyon is the satellite service i had, it is commercial grade. i still have the dish, a 1.3 M on a nice pole and the box. it is basically a linux server they remotely manage

Yea oldsmoboat... I know EXACTLY how you feel. I moved to NY (using roadrunner) to Florida for school. Little did I know I lived 2 miles out of range of Cable. I can't get ANYTHING here except Satellite (Currently using DirecWay) or 56k. I used to game, not anymore. It's really bad, I don't know if I can survive 4 years. I'm wondering - where did you move to?

Is there an actually "gamable" satellite company? Or is that impossible? That's all I really did on the internet was game, I mean I bought my new rig and all too. Now I can't even play games on it due to this garbage internet. I see some of you talking about your own equipment, but I'm only 18 years old and would have NO idea how to set that up or whatever you have to do with it. All I know is I'm being ripped off by this DirecWay company @ $60/month. My cable in new york was only $30/month, and I could play games. I have no idea what to do, any other options?
 
Impossible. too much lag. i use freakin Direcway. i live 30 miles from broadband. grrrrrrrrrr. Its so freakin irritating. Can only download 170MB every 14 hours or they shut you off. f***!!! $60 a month for this BS!!!. 3 second lags!!!. I haven't played a game online in ages. I went from 28.8k dialup to Direcway so I've never played online really. The most "intense" game I've played online is the 1998 game Monster Truck Maddness 2 on the Internet Gaming zone. (Back when people used dialup.) Maybe you guys have more options but i sure dont. Its either this, or 26.4k dialup. I'm waiting for WiMAX. Until then, Direcway will just keep its grip on me.
