just link... that data has to go 22,000 miles EACH WAY to get back fourth, and thats not even fiber land lines...
but for ping... your looking into the 2500-3000 range.. aka smooth as hell😛
which are you looking at starband? directPC? WildBlue?
the cost is the only thing stopping me.... your looking at $300-$500 start up cost, then $70 a month for a what i would call "a totally crappy ass super long distance DSL, or incredibly overloaded, and severly bandwidth oversold cable line" and to add salt to the wound....... you get a ping worse then that of a 2400 baud modem..
and i'd still get it.... even tho i know DSL will be here within 6 months, and cable is coming as well....
IMHO the only ppl the current satellite internet technology would be "worth it" is someone in the complete boon docks(like no cable since you get tv as well) maybe a cabin with a 3 mile dirt driveway, something like that.

Look, there are multiple reasons NOT to get a stellite connection.
1) It still uses your phone line.
2) Your ping is abominable! BECAUSE you SEND through the phone and and RECEIVE through the satellite. AND your upload is limited to 33.6 -- ALL phone line uploads are.
3) Installation is expensive.
4) A good dial-up will give you less headaches AND will cost less.

Actually starband is both ways so you don't use your phone line. I believe its supposed to be like 500kb/s down and 128kb/s up. but from the forums I read it was more like 50kb/s up and the down ranged from 300-800. But it didn't sound very reliable and the install is lame.
I have direcpc,the system is under $150,$19.95 mo.for 25 hours or $39.95 for unlimited.You can set it up yourself,or if you want to wait a week or two,the installation is free.I`ve had a few problems with the software to start with,but everything works fine now.I can download about a 40 mb file in under 10 minutes,were before with regular dialup,it would take several hours.
