Satellite Internet problems at work

Alright, I don't know much about networking as it is, and I have little knowledge of how everything was set up at work (I didn't do it, but I'm the only one there who has any idea) but here's the situation:

At work, we have satellite internet 2-way through DirecWay. There is one computer set up with the two modems, and the router. It has the diagnostic stuff, etc.. all on that computer. The problem started yesterday. The internet just stopped working on all the computers. The status of the satellite program still said "connected via satellite, Ready, signal strength: 90" (which is very good). All the right lights were on and blinking. Yet if you tried to load a webpage anywhere, it just kept trying to connect then gave a general error. We tried restarting and stuff and nothing work. After two phone calls to DirecWay tech support, I was instructed to hook up a dial-up modem and run a setup so that it would reconfigure all the satellite coordinates, etc... We had done this before about 8 months ago when it stopped working and has been fine since. So it's all setup and well and it works so I hang up with them. Within 10 minutes, the exact same problem: It says its connected but really when you try to do anything on the web it just as if it has no connection.

But in between messing with it, I figured out that if I restart the host computer, it GENERALLY makes it work again (on all computers). But for like 5 minutes at max. This is very odd. And on some computers it seems to work while on others it doesn't (although all of them become disconnected after more than a few minutes of internet use). Example: I was on one computer running LiveUpdate and while it's trying to connect, I start LiveUpdate on a computer right next to it. I look back on the first one and it is still connecting (AKA it won't work) and then turn to the 2nd one, and it has already connected and is downloading! THe 1st one fails, and I try again in a minute and it works (therefore I have an internet connection at the moment). But within a minute or two, neither of them are working.

I have no idea what causes this sporadic connection and disconnection, and why restarting kind of makes it work for very short usage, even though the whole time the satellite is connected and supposedly working.

Any ideas?

have you tried turning off the direclink modem for about 15min. and turning it back on, sometimes it needs to completely clear it's internal memory. and post with a fresh bios load.

I'd be looking closer at the machine that's connected to the satellite link, since restarting it seems to fix it for a short time. Do the usual virus/spyware scans, look at the event log, etc.

I have limited experience with satellite but If your "host" computer is running the Direcway software and ICS then it's probally the culprit. Sounds like virus or spyware type symptoms to me. Do others have the abilty to download from the internet? If so I'd check for unknown services running in the background or in the system tray. I have also heard good reports about the business class 4020 direcway modems that have a built in router and allow you not to have to run any "client" software on your PC's. ( only if upgrading is an option)

If your problem persists try posting on www.broadbandreports.com they have a satellite forum and some really good moderators that are experts with Direcway.

Good Luck.
