Satellite in the dark

😕I am using a satellite modem that only has an USB output. I also have an established home network. I'm trying to find a way to convert from USB out to ethernet so I can hook all the up. Any ideas??????

I know there are numerous USB to ethernet converters available.
I don't think that is right. There are lots of USB devices you plug into your pc which have an ethernet connector on the other end. But, that isn't what he needs. He would need a USB device he would plug into his USB modem. I'm not aware of any such devices, but if there are I'd be interested in hearing about them. The problem, as I understand it, is that a USB device needs to be connected to a PC in order to work. In this case, there would be no pc -- you'd be trying to connect a USB modem to an ethernet router.

As far as I know, you either need the Draytek, or you need a new ethernet modem, or you need to go the ICS route.

Jackmds explained this USB stuff to me way back when, so if he is around perhaps he can either correct what I am saying if I am wrong or else explain it more clearly.

I stand semi-corrected. I've seen something like this (maybe in development) but I can't find any reference to it whatsoever.

Last time I checked (few months ago), the draytek's did not support sattelite.

I believe their are 2 products that do support it. One being from the company that sells the modems and the other is a $1000 box which is basically linux on a small PC configured to run everything from email, to firewall, etc.

I am pretty sure the Sat broadband co's sugest setting up a PC with ICS to share it with the rest of the LAN using ethernet.

That sucks.

Is it typical for satellite companys to sell USB-only modems? If so, why? I'm really glad I exchanged my USB DSL modem right away for an ethernet one; I didn't know much about networking at the time but I did know that USB could eventually be a problem.

I believe Sat only uses USB. The setups I have seen use either 1 or 2 modems. 1 modem for d/l 1 for upload. If only 1 is used, then upload is done by telephone line.

Their is this:

Hughes DW4020

I cant find the linux based 1 I referred to before, but @ $1k it is a waste.
