I was thinking about getting a standard definition DVR for DirecTV, but I can only find DirecTV branded DVR receivers. Last time I looked for just receivers there were many companies selling them. Has DirecTV pushed everyone out of the market so you have to buy their stuff?

DTV never had any many options for DVR receivers. In the last 7 years or so you had the Directivo, and now you have the DTV DVR. There were no others.

That is probably right, I am just now looking into DVR's. But in the past there was at least competition, now it looks like the only option is to lease the DirecTV equipment. Which I am not really sure of, they want you to pay $100 to get the equipment, pay a monthly fee and then buy a service contract on the equipment. But I figure that if it is leased equipment why should I pay for a service contract for something they will want back someday.

There used to be different brands of receivers but DirecTV got rid of all that and is down to their own branded receivers.

You should be able to get the SD DirecTV DVR for free with a new subscription. Or even if you have an existing subscription, call their customer service/retention number and they should upgrade you for free.

I have already called about 4 times. They want $200 for the HD and $100 for the SD DVR. I guess I will just keep bugging them.

I guess it only took 5 times. I called tonight and I "qualify" for a free DVR now. They gave me a hard time saying an installer had to come install it and they cannot just ship it to my house and an installer could not come out for a week or so. But they did say that if I went and bought the SD DVR at a local store they would credit my account. So I guess I might be buying one this weekend.
