Satalite internet

My boss was looking at satellite internet as an upgrade for his home internet service, (he has ISDN right now and he lives out in a more rural area). His main concern is the latency that is involved with the transition between the dish and the satellite. Is it too high to play games?

He says he can live with the ISDN for web surfing but he is an avid gamer and ISDN is far too slow and he gets kicked from servers all the time for a low ping. He would also like a static address because work involves connecting in and out of his home network, but on the service he is looking at, it is and extra $20.

Do any of you currently use satellite for gaming?
How bad is the latency, and does it affect the game play?

I haven't seen it used in about 2 years, but a friend of mine had it and would download ~75k/sec but got pings around 350-400ms on most servers.
 
We had RF broadband for a couple of years (Sprint). The ping times made gaming a waste of time. Except checkers. That worked OK.

I'd get automatically booted from many game servers because of the high ping times.

There are relatively easy and reliable ways to emulate a static IP with a non-static IP. Check out no-ip.org.

Doesn't really "emulate" a static..
you'll have to use an update client to notify No-IP when your IP address changes..
 
Direcway has pings around 1300ms. Plus almost all providers that i know of have a bandwidth cap. The Direcway home plan (which i use) is 170MB a day. While I thought that would be ok in the beginning, it is now the biggest pain of the service (that and the fact i haven't played a game online in 3 years 🙁). Also, $60 to get crappy service less than my neighbor who pays $35 is kinda rediculous. (Bellsouth DSL stops a mile from my road). (I live 30 miles in the country so its been a long time coming this far.)
 
A friend of mine has satalite because they are in a remote area so it's that or dial up. I tried playing starcraft on battlenet with no luck. I was able to play Gunbound, it was slow but worked... Although I'm sure I ticked a few people off.
 
Geo Sync satellites are 26K miles away so they can stay in a virtual identical position as it relates to the earths rotation and stay visible constantly to the dish's on the ground. WIreless like all other EMR travels at the speed of light. In space. not on earth but so part of that travel is not speed of light but lets say for giggles it does travel at the speed of light the whole way, both trips (There and back) That's 186 miles a second. So in a perfect environment your ping would take close to 400ms to get pack. Now factor in the earth's atmosphere which will hamper your trip. Also factor in load and traffic in the path. Your not going to see better than 500ms pings when using satellite.

The short story is satellite is not a workable solution for gaming. Gaming and the latency allowed by a game would have to change dramatically. The laws of physics are not going to change.
