What exactly are the differences between a SATA drive and a SCSI drive. Is it all just in the chips on board? I'm assuming the platters and read heads are identical in both.

What does SAS do that is unique?

Why would the platters and read heads be identical? The main difference between SATA/SAS and SCSI is design, the serial vs parallel bus...but I'm sure there's others! The difference between SATA and SAS is how it's done...granted, this is all in layman's terms. I'm no expert.
