SATA TO IDE converter?

Do SATA TO IDE converters work well? How about the $6 cheapies on dealextreme, etc?

I've got one of the SATA & IDE to USB converters and it's very flaky. Perhaps just because USB is involved.
 
I've used several in the past. It's a hit or miss deal for most part and IIRC, they worked with about 4/5 MOBOs or controllers I used.
 
I don't have any problems with my External USB setup that is a Sata to IDE, then to USB.

It just depends on what you bought.
