Sata to IDE adapter

I ordered a Sata to IDE adapter. When I received it to my dismay my sata cables won't fit. It seems they are not compatible. Any input on this?
I have an old Hard drive that I want to use as a backup and connect it to the MB.

This is confusing. In that case, what you want is a PATA to SATA adapter. You have an older PATA HDD and want to connect it to a SATA port in your mobo, right?

BTW, both STA and PATA are both IDE (they both use Integrated Drive Electronics.)

Yes,that the situation.

OK - you need to find an adapter like this . . .

It connects to the PATA drive like this:

Here is another connection toa CD drive:

Vendors also cause a lot of confusion - they often show SATA to PATA adapters instead of PATA to SATA. When they say "IDE," it really gets confusing.

This is the item in the above pics: http://www.xpcgear.com/cbis100.html

It maybe available elsewhere cheaper.

Yep! The Egg has it for less:

The only variation in SATA cables (connectors) are SATA and eSATA the "e" denotes an external connection, a regular SATA cable will not fit in an eSATA port.
