I have an external hard drive enclosure that has an external SATA connection (but *not* an eSATA connection - ie it is a normal SATA connection on the outside of the enclosure).
My question is whether it is safe to run a SATA cable from an internal SATA port on my motherboard out of my case and into my external enclosure?
The only problem I can think of is that the enclosure has its own power supply and thus there could be a grounding issue - but one might think that if both the computer and enclosure are plugged into the same power strip they would have the same ground? Should I power down before connecting and removal?
The problem I have is that my USB 2.0 port on my external enclosure has died. Plus the SATA would be faster.
