SATA - SATA connection from MB to external drive?

I have an external hard drive enclosure that has an external SATA connection (but *not* an eSATA connection - ie it is a normal SATA connection on the outside of the enclosure).

My question is whether it is safe to run a SATA cable from an internal SATA port on my motherboard out of my case and into my external enclosure?

The only problem I can think of is that the enclosure has its own power supply and thus there could be a grounding issue - but one might think that if both the computer and enclosure are plugged into the same power strip they would have the same ground? Should I power down before connecting and removal?

The problem I have is that my USB 2.0 port on my external enclosure has died. Plus the SATA would be faster.

Ah, the other possibility is to remove the drive from the enclosure and dock in my case. Perhaps I'll do that...

Do you have a eSATA port on your mobo, if so just use a eSATA to SATA cable so you dont need to ghetto run it from a internal sata port to outside your case. I bought one by mistake thinking it was eSATA to eSATA which is what i need for my enclosure so if you need one PM me ill give it to you for the cost of shipping.

Hey Rifterut - thanks for the offer, but alas I don't have an eSata port.
