SATA raid + non-raid HDD on same controller?

I bought a really cheapo Syba SATA 4-port controller. The box says it will host raid and non-raid drives at the same time, but I can't get it to work. I've installed raid drivers OK. I've got my main HDD on it (Windows already installed) plus 2 other SATA drives that I want to mirrow raid for storage. When all 3 are connected it says I have no valid drives and it won't boot to my Windows drive even though I know it works with my other controller. Do I need to do something special in the controller's BIOS to get this working?
