I would like nothing more than to do a couple of Raptors but at 36 Gig in SATA raid 0 they arent big enough.I do a lot of TV recording and video editing, large file transfer, video storage.I've had great preformance from my Western digital 80 gig 8 meg plus great reliability from other Western digital drives,SCSI and EDIE.The reason for the indecision is because the specs at Storage Reveiw seem to favor the Maxtors by a slight margin.Has anyone experence with either of these drives or i guess any input? Thanks for any help or opinions.

What is your budget you have to spend?

If you can keep your budget open a little, I'd go for the Raptors in a Raid 0 configuration or even 1 Raptor alone, and then one large drive 7200rpm 8mb cache for all your video.

Also, don't buy a product for a slight margin. You should look at warranties included, the Western Digital 120GB 8MB cache drive I own has a 3 year warranty whereas I've heard that Maxtor and a few other companies are switching to 1 year warranties.

One more thing, is speed or space more important, and what is your current hard drive setup and what kind of improvement are you looking for?

Maxtor drives with capacities of 120GB or greater and with a 8mb buffer (DM+9) carry a full 3 year warranty. The WD still use ball bearing motors and tend to develop a whine whereas the Maxtor's are all fluid dynamic bearings. :)

Current drives...Western digital 80gig 8meg buffer ATA100 EDIE,Western digital WDE9150 9.1gig 10,000 rpm SCSI,IBM DNES-309170w 7200rpm SCSI.I use the Western Digital SCSI for a second OS and the swap file when in Win XP on the Western Digital 80gig EDIE drive. The IBM SCSI is for backup and storage of saved programs. If i did the Raptors and a second non RAID storage drive i wouldn't be improveing my position much,i'd have a fast OS but my file transfer and editing speed would be the same as it is now.My plan was to partition the RAID 0 aray into a 20gig OS and a 100gig storage\manipulation drive.I guess the perfect answer would be 2 Raptors in raid 0 AND 2 Maxor\Western Digitals in RAID 0(to answer another question...That exceeds my budget!).Wouldn't the Maxtors\Western Digitals in RAID 0 be faster than a single Raptor?
