SATA question

Got a question about SATA. I've got a laptop with specs listed here:

Going to be swapping out the hd for an ssd and according to to the specs it only says SATA. Was thinking of picking up this drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

and it says SATA III. Will this work in my laptop? I'm assuming SATA is referring to the interface, the III is referring to speeds, but I don't want to drop $90 to find out it's not compatible. Never really worked on a laptop before.

Looks compatible. You're correct, SATA is interface, III referring to SATA rev 3.

Check these specs against your current drive:

Width
69.85mm
Depth
100mm
Height
9.5mm

I've never had a drive replacement NOT fit, but it doesn't hurt. 🙂

The laptop will be SATA II. But SATA III drives are still compatible with SATA II ports. So it'll be okay. But you want to make sure that the SSD will fit into the HDD enclosure too. That sometimes doesn't happen 😛

If you're really unsure, you can always call or email them and ask.

Some notebooks only accept a 7mm-height drive.

And there are mixed thoughts on this, but since you are installing into a SATA-2 system, you might look at older (and usually cheaper) SATA-2 SSDs since you will not get the speed of the SATA-3 interface. The counter thought to that is, for forward-thinking get the SATA-3 now and later you won't regret it when you transfer the drive to a SATA-3 system.

Do I need to get a "notebook kit" vs just a drive? Like I said, never really worked on a notebook before. I'm seeing some of these drives have a link to the notebook kit which seems to be bout $10-15 more.

The Samsung 830 is a 7mm SSD. It has standard screw holes on the corners and the back. It is SATA III, and has no problem with a SATA II notebook.

I just put two of them into Lenovo T510 Thinkpad. Assume your notebook has some sort of cage or caddy that holds the HDD. All you need do is replace the HDD with theSSD and go from there. You can do a clean install or clone the HDD to the SSD (that's what I did - no problems.)

This shows how to replace the HDD in the HDD bracket assy.
