SATA ports on MBs. Can all ports be used without RAID?

Often motherboards with have 2 SATA port on the board with an additioal 2 controlled by a RAID chip.
Can four serial ATA drives be hooked up in a non-RAID configuration, or are the additional SATA ports RAID only?
