SATA PCI Cards slower than on-board?

Subject says it all - I was wondering if there would be any (even theoretical) slowdown using PCI SATA cards; in that train of thought, even using PCI IDE cards.

Assume a fairly recent board - Say an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe with built-in SATA. I hope I don't come off as lazy, I just have a pretty good working system and don't have the time right now to answer a nagging question (Googling hasn't answered it yet)

The reason I'm bringing it up is I have to do voodoo magic to make XP use the 10k Raptor as the boot / system drive - I don't have an array, and for this simple gaming machine, I don't plan on ponying up for another. I'm considering using the SATA card that came with my raptor just as an ease-of-use factor, but don't want to take a performance hit doing so.

Thanks in advance

Onboard SATA devices are already on the PCI bus, with the exception of those of the ICH-5/R chipsets.

If you do use the PCI card, use PCI slot #4 (the second one from the bottom). It doesn't have to share its IRQ with anything else.

For the record, VIA does have a southbridge with native SATA as well.
