This is an older Plextor SATA DVD Drive 712SA. It was
initialy launched soon after the Intel 875 Chipset was first brought to market. But there is no advantage to using SATA Over PATA for Burining CD\DVD's. Stick with PATA for Optical Devices and save your SATA ports for HDD's

The Plextor 712 SATA came out early middle of last year. AFAIK it was the first one. MSI has one also - and perhaps there are others but I haven't done an exhaustive search.
. They only work with the SATA controller in some Intel and Silicon Image chipsets. Should work with ALL SATA II compliant controllers. Nothing to be gained by using them right now...

Sure there is... the smaller cable is a huge advantage. Plus, if you don't have any IDE slots open, SATA works well.

You are correct, but I was refering to actual drive performance. There is not a bit of differance in performance between SATA and PATA optical drives.

Maybe you are thinking of the Plextor 716sa it is a differant drive from the Plextor 712sa. The 712sa came out in early 2003. I will check my records, I have the approximate date marked since It came out just before I purchased my Plextor Premieum.

. The 716sa hasn't shown its face yet and it has been due for some time. Remember that some Plextor models have a $30. rebate going on them (thru end of March) so there is still about a $30. difference after rebate as the SATA models don't have rebates. I got a 712a at the end of October and my rebate check came just yesterday...
