Can anyone tell me of the top of their heads if the IT7 Max2 Ver2 has the right SATA controller to take advantage of the WD SATA HD's (I think there called Raptors)?

i'm not familiar with this specific board, but to my knowledge all WD (or any other brand) SATA's, Raptors or not (Raptor is just the name of WD's 10,000rpm line of drives, currently available in only 36gb and 74gb versions) will run on all SATA ports, UNLESS it's the new SATA2 drive. But I don't think there is a SATA2 raptor yet. So in short, you should be good!

I know the board supports SATA, but I've read some things about having to have the right chipset to really take advantage of SATA hard drives and of course the right hard drive. I don't really understand hwat all is involved and thought maybe someone here could explain it better to me. :)

For SATA II features like NCQ, you need to have a SATA II chipset to take advantage of those specific features. To my knowledge, the only ones at the desktop/consumer level are some Intel 9xx series and the NF4. I will let someone else comment on the benefits of this because (as some of my previous posts will indicate) I am an idiot when it comes to hard drives because I can't afford a Raptor myself.
