Ok, So the old Seagate SATA drive just went KaPut. Figured this would be a simple routine, but its not being so friendly. I made the boot disk and tried ALL the options out of disparation. (when I was working on it, at a friends-no way to access the internet)

So anyone have any idea what i need to do? This is a Clean install of XP on a SATA Maxtor 120gb Drive.

Every thing seems fine, (i even run the zerofill utility) but when XP installation starts it says no drive is present and quits. I even tried using both fat32 and ntfs. No luck either way.

But in the utility it say some thing about PCI and this drive is SATA and connect directly to the MB. No pci card is used.

You say "I made the boot disk and tried all the options". I don't understand, can you tell me, what boot disk do you mean ?

Actually my friend made the bootdisk, its the Maxtor utility thingy that you put on a floppy to set up the drive. I just came over at the height of his frustration. And I couldnt figure it out, and we tried every option logically available to do.

I guess I will have to go over there with my laptop so I can post some more detailed information. Its a home build, rather nice and this guy is no dummy. The board is ASUS, kingston ram, ati AIW, (three little birds LCD monitor (??)),..nice stuff.

When installing Windows, it says "Press F6 to install a SCSI or RAID driver." So, press F6 to install the driver, then stick in the floppy.

AFAIK Maxtor or any other drive manufacturer does not provides SATA drivers - these are mb specific - since this PC already had SATA drive - the mb natively supports SATA or a CD with the drivers came with the mb. So ask your friend to find the CD (or you download the SATA drivers from the mb maker's web site) and use it at the F6 stage - it comes just after install starts - so carefully lookout for it.
