sata instalation?

i put together a new computer a month ago but installed an old harddrive which i didnt format as to save valuable things. computer was running slow. and from responses to that problem on this forum i went and bought a seagate 120g 7200rpm sata harddrive to install. now question is how do i do it? my old hard drive was an IDE and i didnt even install that. i want to put windows XP on it and have my processor and mobo read that hardrive at start up so i guess i want that to be the master but i also dont want to take out my old harddrive either. and to make make life easier for me i want to get this all done right on the first try 😀

Simple. First, remove the power from your old ide. Plug in the serial ata. Get it all set up first, then plug your old drive back in. That is the safe way to do it so that you are sure not to mess up anything. The boot order between the two is set up in the bios, just set it to boot from the serial ata drive first when you plug the IDE back in. Serial-ata does not have a "master/slave" relationship with drives.

Also, when you try to install XP, be sure to press F6 to install the drivers for your serial ata controller.

what do you mean by get it all set up first, thats the troubling part are there step by step directions anywhere where i can follow on the web? and when do i press F6 for the drivers before or after install windows XP... sorry tried to save myself a few bucks in building it myself but added more aggrivation

By get it all setup he means put the hard drive in and connect the cables for it. It will prompt you to push F6 to install other drivers at one point early on. Just have them saved to a floppy disk and follow the prompting. Simple as that.

http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X-E%20Deluxe&Type=Latest So, step 1, get the serial ata drivers for XP on diskette. Reboot the computer with your xp cd in the drive, boot from it. When xp starts loading, it will say press f6 for.......press f6, give it the disc. load xp load all the drivers starting with chipset. load all security updates also, be sure you arent connected to the net when you do all this
How do you expect the poor ah heck to get his security updates if not connected to the internet? Unless he just happened to order one of those Microsoft update CDs...

ok i finally got to try out the directions given and i got to the point where when you load Xp from the cd it asks to press F6 if installing other blah blah blah. so i hit F6 but nothing happens it doesnt go to a different screen or anything then it asks to hit F2 if i'm doing something with a raid setup. which by the way didnt do much for installing my harddrive. i went to the above website and downloaded the bios 1010 which i think was what i was suppose to do. but they dont seem to be the right ones or at least i'm not sure they are. question i guess is what am i to do to install the harddrive if the F6 button isnt working any ideas?
