SATA II

I recently heard about this, I was impresed by the suposed 6gb/s data speed. But my question is will it work on my motherboard if I only have standart SATA plugs.(prbl. not right?) Can anyone tell me about any good sites where I might fing more info on this?

You're not going to see much improvement with SATAII vs SATA. Just a marketing ploy by hard drive vendors. Same with NCQ. A decent SATA or PATA hard drive will have a working range of 30 to 60 MB/sec. I'd pay more attention to the warranty. The better Seagate drives carry a 5yr warranty.
 
Yes. Maximum sustained transfer rate I see is Maxtor's SATA-II
But it's still around 65MB/s which is WAY off the 150MB/s SATA-I can even provide

Quite true. You might see some small benefit for transferring files that are smaller than the size of the buffer of the HD you're transferring to but once you exceed that size, (let's say 8mb) there will be no benefit AT ALL.

SATAIII will have 6Gb/s. SATAII is half that.

Also, SATAII won't do too much for speeding up your PC, but SATAII drives tend to have other features that do. Since they are brand new technology, they often have stuff like 16MB buffers, NCQ, low seek times, high platter densities, etc., all of which help speed and lower noise. I have the Hitachi T7K250 and its great, and I'm pretty impressed with the specs of the new Seagate 7200.9s as well.

*Corrected* as per LED's post & QFT for the time being. 3Gb/s SATA will likely be needed once we're deep into the era of perpendicular based hard drives.

As for NCQ, I don't know about that. Although it's only one scenario, this looks like a good example of NCQ's benefits at work.
 
SATA-II really isn't necessary yet. SATA-I can theoretically hit 150 mbps, but it hasn't even gone close to it yet. It'll be a while before drives can actually use 300 mbps.

Gb = Gigabit
GB = Gigabyte
Mb = Megabit
MB = Megabyte

You're completely misunderstanding what that link is saying. What that link is saying is that there is no such thing as SATA II. Their name has been changed to SATA-IO, so don't use SATA II to describe the feature set of SATA-IO. The second generation of SATA absolutely DOES mean 3Gb/s. A device cannot be second generation SATA without support for 3Gb/s.

Ex) 1.5gb/s = 150MB/s

Sort of, you are right that those things do not equal each other, but in reality both gb/s and mb/s mean nothing at all. The correct symbols are Gb/s and Mb/s.

Also, 1.5 Gb/s does NOT equal 150 MB/s. Try the math again, and you will find the correct answer is 187.5 MB/s
 
Also IIRC the 3Gb/s isn't for each drive. That is for all the drives. So if you have 3 SATA II drives, that 300 is being shared.

I remember reading that somewhere, but i could be seriously mistaken. Can anyone verify this?

IIRC (too!) the 3Gb/s SATA interface is for each drive per cable. However, there's a new SATA feature that will allow sharing of that extra bandwidth to many drives. Possibly via a SATA cable similar to PATA cables but with alot more connectors.

SATA II has full duplex dedicated bandwidth to every channel just like SATA I. Unlike SATA I, the 2nd generation adds the ability to use hubs to allow multiple drives on the same channel.

Yep my finger stayed to long on the shift key so hey I FU...also the scenerio of what Pariah stated is just about the same thing as to what happen to USB1.1 and USB2.O which is all now just labed USB in different Cats (ie. Low Speed, HiSpeed)
