... and that's because SATA host interfaces don't do the SATA-II link speed negotiation. Because /someone/ missed out on making this idea backward compatible, that ends you up with the drive stuck in 3 Gb/s interface mode on an interface that does 1.5 Gb/s.
Thus, if you plug a 3 Gb/s capable SATA-II drive to a true 1st generation SATA interface, you'll need to preconfigure the drive to use 1.5 GB/s interface mode. Jumpers, soft configuration, whatever appropriate. Note that 3 Gb/s is an /optional/ feature of SATA-II. Not all drives have it to begin with.
