SATA II with SATA I

Can I use a SATA 300mbs with a mobo that has SATA 150 mbs?

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939 board.

Yes, most drives have a jumper that you set to match your controller while some Hitachi drives have a software switch (DL the utility from the Hitachi site unless you bought a retail kit).

... and that's because SATA host interfaces don't do the SATA-II link speed negotiation. Because /someone/ missed out on making this idea backward compatible, that ends you up with the drive stuck in 3 Gb/s interface mode on an interface that does 1.5 Gb/s.

Thus, if you plug a 3 Gb/s capable SATA-II drive to a true 1st generation SATA interface, you'll need to preconfigure the drive to use 1.5 GB/s interface mode. Jumpers, soft configuration, whatever appropriate. Note that 3 Gb/s is an /optional/ feature of SATA-II. Not all drives have it to begin with.
